Email Policy
Affiliates
NBER facilitates mail forwarding for NBER affiliates with the standard firstname_lastname@nber.org or first initial followed by lastname@nber.org (e.g. John_Smith@nber.org or jsmith@nber.org). Email is delivered to the registered email address with NBER. Changes can be requested via email to updates@nber.org.
Sponsored Researchers
Researchers who are sponsored by an NBER affiliate receive a unix account for research computing servers. This account can also be used to forward mail to a home institution, or they can use the NBER mail services to send/receive messages through their desired mail client. As long as a researcher remains actively sponsored by an NBER affiliate, the email forwarding and server account will remain active.
Staff
NBER staff receive full email accounts and are advised not to forward outside the NBER system per the Employee Guidelines. Staff also receive a NBER Google Workspace (nber.org Gmail and Google Drive) account. See the Google Workspace documentation for more information.
For postdocs and other fellows, NBER will provide a full email account upon request; the default setting is to forward emails to the requested external email address at the researcher’s home institution. If NBER provides a full account to a researcher (including NBER Gmail) during their appointment, we will work with the researcher to transition that to a forwarding account at the conclusion of their position. As long as a researcher remains actively sponsored by an NBER affiliate, the email forwarding and server account will remain active.
Standards
NBER provisions usernames based on the following standard, but can accommodate requests for deviations or additional aliases were appropriate. The standard is the first seven letters of the last name followed by the first initial of the first name (e.g. smithj@nber.org). Name collisions are handled on a case by case basis.
