NBER Diversity Policy Statement
The NBER recognizes that diversity in a research community increases the quality of its work, the range of questions it studies, and the extent to which its findings inform a broad range of policy challenges. We are therefore committed to developing diverse and inclusive groups of affiliated scholars as well as conference participants.
We also recognize the value of different perspectives and experiences in the workplace, and the importance of recruiting a diverse team. The NBER welcomes researchers, board members, and employees with diverse identities and backgrounds including, but not limited to, age, disability, ethnic background, first-gen status, gender identity or expression, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. We actively support research on disparities in economic outcomes, including but not limited to those that are related to ethnic group, gender, and race.
The NBER maintains a discrimination- and harassment-free workplace. Staff members must comply with employment policies that embody these imperatives or face consequences up to and including dismissal.
Participants at NBER conferences must agree to abide by a Code of Conduct that advances free and open discussion and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any kind. Conference organizers work to create a welcoming culture by including researchers from varied backgrounds and promoting lively discussion while respecting all perspectives and participants. The NBER strives to promote diversity among conference participants by disseminating calls for papers through channels that reach scholars from groups that have historically been under-represented in the economics profession, and promotes diversity among its affiliates by encouraging nominations of scholars from these groups for potential affiliation.
