For this pilot project will obtain RCR data and integrate it into our HITS metrics. We are currently conducting research relating the innovativeness and impact of the research to the age of researchers. Once RCR is included in our database, we will also begin to include RCR in our analyses and compare estimates for RCR and our various HITS metrics.
We view the two approaches as entirely complementary. HITS are an attempt to characterize work along a variety of dimensions using the substance of a paper. At its core, RCR is a method to define micro-fields (using co-citation patterns), which has so far been applied to adjusting citation counts. Thus, the RCR co-citation approach might be applied to HITS to create synthetic fields to improve comparisons across fields, which is something that might be done under a full-scale project.
