The fellowship program aims to foster a new generation of economists focused on researching innovation and productivity policies, particularly through a fiscal and budgetary lens. The program will explore the effects of federally funded research and development (R&D), changes in immigration policy, and permitting processes for infrastructure on economic growth and productivity. By addressing critical gaps in existing research, the fellowship seeks to inform dynamic policy analyses that can guide legislative decision-making. Inspired by successful programs like the NBER's Health and Aging fellowship, the initiative will build a community of early-career scholars and provide them with mentorship, collaborative research opportunities, and connections to federal agencies. This will culminate in an in-person workshop in Washington, D.C., where fellows can present their research and discuss its policy implications with key stakeholders, including members of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and other federal agencies. The program’s goal is to produce high-quality, policy-relevant research that can support informed decision-making in U.S. economic and fiscal policies.
