This project will examine questions related to US regional disparities in the rates of innovation and new business formation and the outcomes associated with them. Research priorities will include studying regional differences in the birth rates of new firms, variation in these rates over time, differences in the composition of the innovator and entrepreneur pool varies across locations, and the effect of the new business formation rate on economic mobility and racial and ethnic disparities in wealth and income. The project will also explore the roles that public policies and location-specific aspects of the financial and economic ecosystem play in contributing to geographic disparities in innovation and in promoting entrepreneurship among historically underrepresented groups, such as women and minorities.
