To encourage research on gender issues in the economies of developing and/or developed nations or historically, the NBER, with the generous support of the Gates Foundation, is sponsoring three dissertation fellowships for doctoral students in economics and allied fields, such as sociology, political science, and health economics.
The fellowships will be awarded for a one-year period. The group will be chosen based on the potential of the applicants to make important contributions to the field as judged by our selection panel: Jessica Goldberg (University of Maryland), Claudia Goldin (Harvard University), and Claudia Olivetti (Dartmouth College).
Each fellowship, for the academic year 2025-2026, will provide a stipend of $42,500, up to $10,000 to defray tuition and fees, and $2,500 to support research costs of any type. Fellows will be expected to participate in the Gender in the Economy Meetings at the NBER Summer Institute in July 2025 in Cambridge MA.
To be eligible for fellowship support, applicants must be enrolled as full-time doctoral students at a U.S. or Canadian university and must have advanced to dissertation candidacy status by the start of the fellowship period. Preference will be given to those entering their fifth or sixth year of doctoral study in 2024/25. The NBER strongly encourages applications from women, members of under-represented minority groups, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
Applicants should upload a short research proposal and a CV, to the application posting on the AEA Job Openings for Economists website. The research proposal should be no longer than 2,000 words (approximately four pages, single spaced, in at least 12-point font and with one-inch margins) with no more than four exhibits (e.g., tables, figures, maps; note: the four exhibits do not count in the page limit). An abstract of no more than 200 words must also be included.
Applicants should ask one (and only one) of their dissertation supervisors to upload a letter of recommendation to the same website, which must attest to the dissertation stage of the candidate. All three components of the application— proposal, CV, and the letter of recommendation—must be received by 11:59 pm (EST) on January 8, 2025. Applicants are responsible for verifying that their letter of recommendation has been submitted by the deadline. Applications that are incomplete, including those that are missing the letter of recommendation, by the deadline will not be considered.
Fellowship awards will be announced in March 2025.
