Japan Project Meeting, 2027
The NBER Japan Project will hold its annual research conference on the Japanese economy in Tokyo on August 3–4, 2027. The meeting is co-sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the Australia-Japan Research Centre at the Australian National University, the Center for Advanced Research in Finance at the University of Tokyo, and the Center on Japanese Economy and Business at Columbia University.
The conference has no set theme. We welcome papers on any aspect of the Japanese economy and will select them based on quality. We particularly encourage submissions from early-career scholars. For reference, last year’s conference program is available.
To be considered, please upload a PDF version by 11:59pm ET on December 1, 2026.
Outlines and extended abstracts are acceptable, but completed papers will receive priority. We expect to notify authors in January, 2027.
The conference will cover business-class airfare for authors traveling from outside Japan and hotel expenses for one author per paper and for each discussant.
On August 5, 2027, the day after the Japan Project Meeting, NBER and the Economic and Social Research Institute of Japan's Cabinet Office will host a separate conference on the Japanese economy, organized by Alan Auerbach and Anil Kashyap on the NBER side. Participants in the Japan Project Meeting will also be invited to attend. Questions may be sent to confer@nber.org.
We look forward to seeing your work and hope you will join us in Tokyo next summer.
