Introduction: The Amazing Twentieth Century

This introductory chapter reviews significant achievements in the twentieth century. These include the development of measures of the national output of goods and services during the 1920s and early 1930s, with the participation of Simon Kuznets; the technophysio evolution; and improvements in health care and education. It then considers the impact of high levels of economic attainment on the distribution of the output of the economy and households.
