The Emergence of National Income Accounting as a Tool of Economic Policy

This chapter discusses the following: the New Deal; the U.S. mobilization for war; the use of national income accounting to allocate resources between military and civilian needs; the role of economists in several wartime agencies, including the Office of Price Administration (OPA), the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and the Statistical Research Group (SRG); American financial aid to Western Europe; and the advent of the American century following World War II.
