The data files below are processed to make the files easier to use with SAS or Stata.

The Dartmouth Atlas ZIP Code crosswalk has been merged on to provide Hospital Referral Region (HRR) and Hospital Service Area (HSA). A ZIP Code distance database is also available.

FIPS state codes have been tagged on as well.

DRGs are Diagnosis Related Groups. APCs are Ambulatory Payment Classification groups.

A provider is any organization, institution, or individual that provides health care services to Medicare beneficiaries. The inpatient and outpatient providers are hospitals.

FY is fiscal year, often October 1 of the previous year until September 30. CY is calendar year.

The outpatient files do not include Maryland because it is not paid under the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS). Instead, they are paid under Maryland waiver provisions.
